What Is a Mantra?
Mantra comes from manas (mind) + tra (that which protects or liberates). A mantra is literally "that which liberates the mind." Not an affirmation. Not a magic spell. A practice of attention and meditation.
The tradition holds that sound is a primary substance of reality, and that a mantra is a particular configuration of it, a sound-form the texts pair with an aspect of consciousness.
The texts describe four levels of speech: the unmanifest silence (Parā), the first visionary stirring (Paśyantī), subtle mental speech (Madhyamā), and audible sound (Vaikharī). Chanting aloud begins at the surface; the tradition says the practice draws attention back through all four.
This is why the tradition counts mantra among the highest inner practices: it is described as touching breath, mind, and identity at once.
A daily practice of attention. No outcome is promised.
